Magazines publish articles on topics of popular interest and current events. The Beam Library has magazines in print, online and microform. Magazines, like journals and newspapers, are called periodicals because they are published at regular intervals throughout the year. Magazines are considered popular sources--not scholarly.

Magazine articles may:

  • be unsigned
  • be written by someone outside the field
  • have no references
  • be written for the general public
  • contain advertisements

  • to find information or opinions about popular culture
  • to find up-to-date information about current events
  • to find general articles written for people who are not necessarily specialists in the topic area
  • to find background information that introduces terminology
