The Internet

The Internet is a global network, connecting many smaller individual networks. Computer communication across the Internet travels through a variety of transmission medium including optical fiber, twisted pair wires, and coaxial cable. For example, the computers in the Beam Library are connected to other computers on campus, across the state, and around the world.

The Internet allows you to communicate with people, move files between computers, and find and share information. While a student at Oklahoma Christian University, you are likely to use:

  • e-mail to communicate with people across the Internet
  • Web to view articles, opinions, stories, art, sounds, and animations stored on Web servers
  • FTP (file transfer protocol) to transfer files from one computer to another across the Internet
